Single Mom goes from singing in the background to living the "Promise"

Y’Anna Crawley has been “singing since she could talk”.  Her love for music and heart for God’s people is what keeps her motivated and dedicated to her gift.  With a strong vocal style unmatched by others, Y’Anna Crawley, the second child of a retired public school employee and a Civil Service HR specialist has two brothers and two sisters hailing from the Nation’s Capitol, Washington, DC. a graduate from Eastern Senior High School in Washington, DC, Y’Anna has always known she wanted to record, perform and now minister in song to the world.  As she developed in the music industry Y’Anna has sung background vocals for a variety of artists to include,  Genobia Jeter, Glenn Jones, Raheem DeVaughn, Angie Stone, Chrisette Michelle, Stephen Hurd, and Jennifer Lopez.  Her musical taste and influences have also included a broad range of singers; Aretha Franklin, The Clark Sisters, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Kelly Price to name a few.

A single of mother of two wonderfully active boys (15 and 2 years of age), Y’Anna knows the importance of balancing a life and career; she’s most humbled and appreciative for the new opportunities that being the second season winner of BET’S Sunday Best has brought to her and her family.  “This is a great time to be a part of BET and the Gospel Music Industry.  While BET is revamping their network programming and Gospel music is being played on even more formats around the country, I can’t help but be ecstatic about where God is gonna take me next!”  Next will include her foundations and platform for single mothers raising boys Momma’s Boys will act as an agent to encourage, teach, provide guidance and information and assist with connecting young boys with positive mentors. Inspired by the testimonials of teenage/single mom’s alike, Y’Anna has been prompted to begin an additional non-profit organization in “THE PROMISE” Foundation. This initiative will seek to provide, health, wellness, fitness, self esteem building, social services, as well as scholarships to single mothers in both the African American & Latino Communities

The first single from her new CD project (which is currently in production) is entitled, The Promise produced by Buster & Shavonni; the duo who will be responsible for the production of her not yet titled CD.  Y’Anna’s rendition of the Bill Withers hit (as performed on BET’s Sunday Best) “Grandma’s Hands” is just a small indication of what this rising new star has to offer the world in music.

“Through the ups and downs and highs and lows, God has truly been faithful and I owe it all to Him,” she said. “Even when I thought my treasure had lost its value, [the Lord] knew and reminded me constantly of the investment that [He] made in me.”

In the end, Crawley beat out 20-year-old fellow single mom, Jessica Reedy, whose performance of the hymn “I Surrender All” brought the audience to tears. (Stay tuned to for a feature article on Ms. Jessica Reedy!)
